In this week's GR I messed with the cartoon format.
Societies features an article about climbing. Also most importantly, my look at Optometry in news, having orchestrated a survey and everything! I've put this as the pic for this post because that is the bit I'm most proud of. Between me and contrib Hugh we probably put about 7 hours work into it, 9 if you include the 2 hours I spent in the sight test. I'm also painfully aware of the spelling mistake in the headline, which I did not write. Let's assume it's a pun on contact lenses...

In a mad effort to get dodgeball into sport, I ended up finishing off a whole page for the sports eds! There's also a societies spotlight for comedy though Aletheia edited this issue's societies. Best of all of course there is Farage the clown on page 2.
This week I begun my other regular feature in GR aside from the cartoon, Society Spotlight. In this I'm featuring a society every week by attending one of their sessions and just writing about what happens, then asking a member to give me some details on what people can expect from further sessions. I also wrote the Give it a Go puff, and the second cartoon appears on page 2.
Here is GR 1082 online. Meanwhile, in Quench, I got my "Blind Date" illustration on the back. The front is better. Having finally got round to finishing my Fringe blog off with a giant post explaining all sorts of things, I'm thrust back into the Cardiff campus scene once again.
(I should add- please do read my Fringe blog, I put a huge amount of effort into it, probably more effort in one month than I put into Quench all of last year. I did most of it on mobile as well or public computers, so it was really a pain to do when fitting between shows and volunteering at theatres. I'm very proud of the finished products and I think I made some good contacts in the theatre world, even though the blog didn't come out that well, I didn't make too many lifelong friends or lovers and I was also really ill and bankrupt by the end.) Now the job of societies co editor and possibly temporary position as cartoonist on Gair Rhydd have begun, the first issue has only been online because the SU can't afford to print it, which is a real shame. I, and many others who've told me, think I've done a great job on the first cartoon, shown here, and it's a shame to have such a limited audience. Never mind though- there's a lot more where that came from (hopefully). The Fringe starts August the 5th. But I started already. So far I reviewed probably the craziest thing I've done in my life, and also Mass. Because I need practice and I need it cheap.
https://medium.com/tom-at-edinburgh-fringe-2016 is the link or you can click Fringe above. Hope you all enjoy and keep following me on Twitter for smaller anecdotes. Another list at the Uni Paper.
http://www.unipaper.co.uk/article/cardiff/features/jul_2016/cardiff-s-most-famous-alumni-revealed As Gair Rhydd is on break for the summer holidays, I've been itching to write something else. I was approached by the editor of the University Paper to have a go at writing some listicles for their website.
Here is the first one. It's not all by me, but see if you can guess which of the entries is mine. I'll be honest- I was going for a kind of half hearted, humorous, tongue in cheek vibe here. The next one, however, is a serious one with a little bit of internet research put in. I am interested in how it will turn out to look however... I've managed to volunteer myself for a position in a theatre at the Edinburgh Fringe festival for the month of August. I'll have a great time, I'm sure, and if I get any free time I will see a show and review it.
Of course I needed somewhere to post reviews so I am trying the Medium blogging platform. If you click Fringe above you will be directed there. If not, this link will do. One article in the last Gair Rhydd, #1080, it's about working more than forty hours a day.
Onwards to pastures anew. It's been a busy couple of weeks in student media land. First I went to Loughborough Students Union for the Student Publication Association National Conference 2016 with a load of people from both Quench and The GRdd. Had a brilliant time and hopefully learned something useful. After returning from #SPANC16, I went to a dodgeball game in Swansea and wrote it up for Sport, as the "curtain call of Varsity." I like dodgeball, if you hadn't guessed. They even put me on the back again. What is it about my face that makes people want to put it down on paper? This week in Gair Rhydd, I wrote a fairly acclaimed spoof article about the Panama papers and the This Week In History section on p2, a favourite of mine... but might not be around much longer. I always say the things I enjoy are the opposite of everyone else. The #BADVICE section might be here to stay though. I had an idea for a Humour section but it's not so likely. My final issue of Quench as Games Ed is out too, which is sad isn't it? Numbers 153 through 158. There's rumours of there being an extra magazine during the gaps when it's not being released next year (mainly summer, christmas and easter holidays) but nothing confirmed yet. In this issue, I did an interview with Filip Victor, a Half Life 2 modder, and reviewed Superhot. There was of course a few other things behind the scenes but those are the main contributions. You'll also see my mug on the back page. (I actually wrote an article, but then the design team just took a quote out of it...) I'm hoping that next year Saman will stay on with it, and possibly my friend Elis who we nominated for best contributor this year as he wrote some good stuff for us. EDIT: There's also a review of Hardcore Henry to have a look at to go with the Superhot review. Now if only I had the time to get all the games articles online. This Saturday is the Media Awards, so we'll see if I win anything. What's next for me? Perhaps I might contribute to Advice a bit more often. Trying to break into News. Will probably go for Societies editor. Of course I'll still contribute to the likes of Video Games and Film next year. Maybe it's about time I got a real job though? Well, I might just have an update on that for you soon... |
